QualityTime Privacy Policy

Last updated: March 24, 2026

QualityTime is a student-led initiative originally developed at Stanford University, operated as an unincorporated student project (not a separate legal entity). It is run on a volunteer basis by current and former students, with advisors and collaborators as available. Team membership may change over time. This Privacy Policy describes how we collect, use, store, and protect your information when you use the QualityTime service. For questions, see Section 11 below.

1. Information We Collect

Account Information: Name, email address, phone number, and password (stored securely as a one-way hash—we never store passwords in plain text).

User Content: Voice recordings, written stories, story transcripts, photos uploaded to the platform, game activity data, voice conversation transcripts, and story prompts you create or respond to.

Usage Data: Timestamps, session duration, interaction patterns, device information (browser type, screen size, operating system), and IP addresses.

Consent Records: When you accept our Terms of Service, we record the timestamp, your IP address, and browser information.

2. How We Use Your Information

3. How We Store and Protect Your Data

All data is stored on Supabase, hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS), with encryption at rest and in transit using industry-standard TLS encryption. Voice recordings and photos are stored on the same secure infrastructure.

Passwords are hashed using bcrypt (cost factor 10) and are never stored or transmitted in plain text.

While we implement reasonable security measures, no method of electronic storage or transmission is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security of your data.

4. Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services to operate QualityTime. Data shared with these services is subject to their respective privacy policies:

5. Data Sharing

We do NOT sell your personal data. We do NOT share identifiable data with third parties except as required to provide the service (cloud hosting, AI transcription) or as required by law.

Stories shared through QualityTime are only visible to the user and their paired family member(s). Voice conversations with the AI companion are private; family members receive only a brief summary—never the full transcript.

6. Your Rights

Regardless of where you are located, you have the following rights regarding your data:

To exercise any of these rights, contact jpiasta@stanford.edu. We will respond within 30 days.

7. Data Retention

We retain your data for as long as your account is active. If the service is discontinued, we will provide at least 30 days notice and offer data export. Data is deleted within 90 days of account deletion or service discontinuation, unless you opt in to continued storage.

8. International Users

QualityTime is operated from the United States. If you access the service from outside the United States, your data will be transferred to and processed in the United States, where data protection laws may differ from those in your jurisdiction. By using the service, you consent to this transfer. We apply the same data protection standards to all users regardless of location.

9. Children's Privacy

QualityTime is not intended for users under the age of 13 (or the applicable age of digital consent in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will promptly delete it.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes via the email address associated with your account. The "Last updated" date at the top indicates the most recent revision. Continued use of the service after notification constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
